Lomé | TOGO |
Social and professional reintegration of street children |
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
The Association des Amis pour une Nouvelle Génération des Enfants – A.N.G.E. was founded in 2001 by Gabriel Amouzou. Accredited by the Togolese government, its mission is to look after children identified by the “green line”, which refers to a free telephone number set up by the government in 2009 to protect children.
OBJECTIFS
ANGE works to socially and professionally reintegrate street, beach and prison children in Lomé. Its main objectives are to contribute to the fight against juvenile delinquency in Lomé, to protect the rights of Togolese children, and to educate/train these street children so that they can integrate more easily into society and live in good conditions.ANGE works to socially and professionally reintegrate street, beach and prison children in Lomé. RESOURCES
From 2001 to the present day, ANGE has improved its structures and greatly diversified its work with children in and around Lomé. In 2018, the construction of new buildings at the primary school in Tchekpo (a village some 50 km from Lomé) has further increased the capacity of the school. In 2019, ANGE completed two dry brick classrooms and built a new office, a terrace and 4 additional classrooms.
A library has also been built in the village.
The association also runs two reception centres, one around twenty kilometres from Lomé and the second in the capital. These centres take care of the children (accommodation, schooling, extra-curricular activities, etc.). The first is particularly involved in the vocational training of young people, thanks to its agro-pastoral farm, its restaurant and its proximity to a training centre. As for the second centre, it is undergoing renovation (addition of dormitories and a terrace).
Since the association was founded, more than 1,400 children have been rescued from the streets.
IMPACT
A.N.G.E used to host young volunteers for short periods (several weeks to 2 months). Based on our successful experience with Fundación Ecuasol, we replicated the model and set up three Civic Service volunteers for a 12-month period, in support of :
♥ health
♥ psychology
♥ special education
In addition, we have launched a poultry farming and laying hen distribution project for a dozen families, in conjunction with the Super Poulet development education project, with the help of a student from Sciences Po.
