Agroecological and permaculture farm |
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
The Ahalen Lurrak/Les Terres des Possibles farm was founded in 2015 in Oneix, in the Basque Country, by two professionals in agriculture and work integration.
Covering 5 hectares, this farm is characterised by several activities: market gardening, animal husbandry, raising awareness among the general public, training future professionals and welcoming people in difficulty.
OBJECTIVES
La ferme des Terres des Possibles se veut à la fois autonome, durable et pédagogique.
The Terres des Possibles farm aims to be self-sufficient, sustainable and educational.
The founders’ aim is to produce organic, energy-efficient fruit and vegetables, and to share their know-how and eco-responsible practices.
This agro-ecological and permaculture farm is helping to develop a more sustainable form of small-scale farming in the context of the climate emergency.
RESOURCES
To be a driving force behind a sustainable agriculture model, farming practices and the farm itself are respectful of the soil and biodiversity. On the one hand, seasonal vegetables are grown without pesticides and the orchard is cultivated using agroforestry (a practice that combines crops with the planting of trees and the presence of animals on the same plot). The infrastructure is also designed to be as energy-efficient as possible. The materials used for construction are reused, and the farm is equipped with a rainwater recovery and solar energy system. The farm also sells its produce through short distribution channels.
To fulfil its social objective, the farm also takes in migrants as part of the Compagnonnage en maraichage agroécologique programme run by the Fermes d’Avenir network, of which it is a member. Since 2018, the farm has welcomed 10 companions, including 5 refugees.
During practical workshops, the farm’s founders train future professionals or amateurs. They also organise educational days for pupils at the local agricultural college.
OUR IMPACT
International Impact supports the association and the Les Terres des Possibles farm by making its accreditation with the Civic Service Agency available so that it can take on volunteers.
