Educational support and socio-professional integration for children living in the disadvantaged suburbs of Phnom Penh |
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC) is an organisation based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was founded in 2006 and officially became a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in 2011.
Since the opening of its first school in 2006, the organisation has grown considerably, opening a scholarship programme, 3 other schools and developing numerous partnerships in order to offer its beneficiaries as many services as possible (medical and dental care, English tutoring, music lessons, etc.).
GOALS
The mission of the NGO Empowering Youth in Cambodia is to create an environment that improves the living conditions and fosters the spirit of community and friendship of the children and teenagers it supports. Its aim is to give these young people from the slums access to the same opportunities as any other young people.
EYC’s beneficiaries are aged between 6 and 24 and grow up in families that generally have a low level of education, no job prospects and very low incomes, making it difficult to access the most essential goods and services.
With the motto “Find your talent, create your future”, EYC wants each of its students to be able to develop socially and professionally, according to their abilities and desires. Staff and volunteers are dedicated to helping young people gain the confidence they need to achieve their goals.
As the challenges of life in the slums are even more difficult for girls and young women, EYC encourages even more girls to take part in its programmes, particularly in sporting activities, which are not traditional activities for Cambodian women. Over 50% of EYC beneficiaries are women.
RESOURCES
EYC has 4 community schools located in the disadvantaged suburbs of Phnom Penh to support around a thousand pupils every year, from primary school to university. It offers a wide range of educational and extra-curricular activities.
The NGO bases its work as much as possible on the communities it wishes to help. With over 50% of its staff made up of current and former students, the team is highly representative of the individuals it supports. With its ‘Team Leader’ programme, older students become team leaders and take charge of certain activities, acting as role models to inspire the next generation.
OUR IMPACT
2022 marks the beginning of the partnership between International Impact and EYC.
This partnership takes 2 forms:
♥On the one hand, International Impact is enabling the Cambodian NGO to take on civic service volunteers to help with educational support and extra-curricular activities (tutoring, sports and cultural activities, English lessons, various workshops), as well as to support the organisation of various events run by the association.

♥ International Impact is also working with EYC to set up a crowdfunding campaign to help it fund its various programmes in Cambodia and its communities.
